Johannes Honecker is a young conductor from Cologne. In September 2023, he completed his Master of Music in Choral Conducting at the University of Music and Dance (HfMT) in Cologne with top marks. He has been known as a freelance choir conductor in the Rhineland for several years.
Born in Aachen, he initially began studying to become a high school teacher, specializing in music and mathematics, before deciding to deepen his music studies with a bachelor's degree in choral conducting under Prof. Peter Dijkstra. In his master's degree, he studied under Prof. Florian Helgath. He received further inspiration from Georg Grün, Frieder Bernius, Zoltán Pad, Michael Gläser, Denis Rouger, Howard Arman, Nicolas Fink and Daniel Reuss, among others.
Regular engagements as a conductor have taken him to various ensembles, including Chorwerk Ruhr, the Zürcher Singakademie, the Rheinische Kantorei, Studium Chorale Maastricht and the WDR Radio Choir. His repertoire covers all eras up to contemporary works. Current projects in 2024 include rehearsals with Chorwerk Ruhr and the Zürcher Singakademie for F. Busoni's piano concerto with Kirill Gerstein as soloist and the SWR Symphony Orchestra under the direction of John Storgårds. In June 2024 he conducted the world premiere of the Morgenstern Songs by the young composer Aljoscha Ristow as well as the opening concert of the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau and the opening concert of the ION Music Festival Nuremberg. Since 2017 he has been artistic director of the concert choir tonart in Bergisch Gladbach. With the Madrigalchor Aachen, which he has directed since January 2018, he is significantly involved in the design and development of the International Choralbiennale Aachen. From 2021 to 2023 he worked in the choir direction team at the Aachen City Theater as a répétiteur and choir director for the opera choir. In April 2023 he was accepted into the Conducting Forum as a scholarship holder of the German Music Council. From January 2025, he will be the new artistic director of the Youth Concert Choir of the Choir Academy at the Konzerthaus Dortmund.
